Ex-Barcelona star Dani Alves has been sentenced to four-and-a-half years, for the accused r*pe of a 23-year-old woman in a Barcelona nightclub in December 2022. A Spanish court found the player guilty, almost a year after being arrested in January 2023.

The former Brazil right-back, who spent most of his career playing for Barcelona, Sevilla, Juventus, and PSG in Europe, is considered one of the greatest full-backs of all time. He joined the Mexican side UNAM in 2022 but terminated his contract after he was detained in Spain. He was charged by the Spanish authorities with r*ape and s*xual assault of a young woman. Despite denying the allegations, he was found guilty by a Spanish court.

Spanish politicians hope that Dani Alves’ four-and-a-half year sentence will set an example

Spanish vice-president Yolanda Diaz, following Brazilian footballer Dani Alves’ conviction, exclaimed that she hoped the four-and-a-half-year sentence would serve as a precedent. A three-judge panel at the Barcelona Provincial Court found the 40-year-old player guilty of sexual assault from a 2022 incident.

The prosecution had demanded a nine-year sentence for the former Barcelona star, while the victim’s legal team asked for 12. Catalan equality minister Tania Verge praised the Alves case, stressing the need for nightclubs to adopt anti-sexual violence protocols and staff training. She highlighted the focus of sexual consent in trials and emphasized the end of impunity for offenders, regardless of their status.

Alves encountered the woman in a Barcelona nightclub in December 2022. He invited her to a camera-free bathroom, where he demanded oral sex and, upon refusal, raped her.
