Liverpool‘s ex-defender has dropped an opinion that might not go well with the club’s fans. Jose Enrique, who played for Liverpool from 2011 to 2016, has claimed he would rather have their Merseyside rival, Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin, over their current Uruguayan Darwin Nunez.

Everton‘s Calvert-Lewin has picked up good form this season. He has scored thrice in the last four games that he has played for the Toffees. But what has made Enrique’s claim a shock is that Nunez himself has not been missing shooting boots this season. Right from the off-the-bench brace against Newcastle to help win the game for the 10-men Liverpool, the Uruguayan has been in top form.

But it seems that Enrique, who made 76 appearances for the Reds, believes Dominic Calvert-Lewin is a more significant threat in front of the goal than Darwin Nunez. This could be credited to his Premier League experience and ability off the ball. However, it has left fans bemused and that too ahead of the huge Merseyside derby. “Liverpool fans are not going to like hearing this from me,” he cautioned before dropping the bombshell statement.

Given their high-pressing tactics, the Spanish defender further stated that he was unconvinced of Darwin Nunez’s development under Jurgen Klopp. Jose Enrique further highlighted how good Calvert-Lewin could be when he is fully fit, adding the much-needed spice ahead of the derby on Saturday.

When Jose Enrique was furious after Liverpool’s disappointing result

Former Liverpool player Jose Enrique sarcastically labeled VAR referee Darren England the ‘Man of the Match’ in Tottenham’s 2-1 win over Liverpool. The match was marred by questionable officiating decisions. However, the most glaring error was the incorrect disallowance of the Luis Diaz goal for offside. IT appeared, even though VAR should have reviewed the offside call, they went on with the on-field decision.

Liverpool also saw Curtis Jones sent off, and Diogo Jota received a soft double yellow card. PMGOL later apologized for the ‘human error’. Before the game, Jose Enrique expressed skepticism about Liverpool’s Premier League title challenge, believing that Manchester City and Arsenal are stronger contenders.

He pointed out Liverpool’s defensive issues and lack of quality options to protect the defenders. Enrique suggested that the team’s primary objectives should be a top-four finish in the league and competing for the Europa League and domestic cups.
