Manchester United secured UEFA Champions League qualification, comfortably beating Chelsea at Old Trafford. Goals from Casemiro, Anthony Martial, Bruno Fernandes and Marcus gave Rashford helped the Red Devils canter to victory.
Chelsea conceded first for the 17th time in the 2022/23 Premier League, their highest in a 38-game season. Casemiro headed home for United as he nodded Christian Eriksen’s free-kick past helpless goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga. Chelsea responded well, with Conor Gallagher and Mykhalio Mudryk missing straightforward opportunities to score.
The game was incredibly open, as the two teams looked incoherent and tired after a long season. Both sides’ midfield was virtually non-existent at times, and there would have been even more goals if it wasn’t for continuous poor decision-making by both teams in transition. United finally took one of their chances, as Martial extended their lead in the fifth minute of first-half injury time. Casemiro released Jadon Sancho with a sublime flick, and he played it to the Frenchman, who turned it into an empty net.
Chelsea’s nightmare season continued as Wesley Fofana gifted United two more goals in the second half. Bruno Fernandes got the better of him with a sublime nutmeg at the edge of the box. The defender rashly dangled out a leg, giving United a spot-kick which the Portuguese converted with ease. Fofana then played a loose pass out from the back, which was pounced upon by Fernandes who played it to Marcus Rashford. The Englishman comfortably went past the Frenchman and slotted the ball home to make it four.

Fans react to Manchester United securing Champions League qualification
Manchester United are now in a great position to secure third place with a two-point lead over Newcastle United. The Red Devils play Fulham at Old Trafford on the final day, while the Magpies face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. However, the Mancunians will focus more on the FA Cup final against arch-rivals Manchester City.
The Citizens are within touching distance of a historic treble, having already secured the Premier League title. United, though, will be adamant to remain the only English club to achieve the unique record. Regardless, the game on June 3rd promises to be a mouth-watering clash.
