AC Monza’s star, Alejandro ‘Papu’ Gomez, a World Cup champion with Argentina, faces a two-year ban from professional football. He failed a drug test before the 2022 World Cup due to the presence of Terbutaline, an illegal substance. Gomez claimed he used it to address a bronchospasm issue from October 2022.

FIFA has informed Papu Gomez‘s current club, Monza FC, and the club released a statement on the issue but they are yet to decide what actions they will take regarding the player.

Monza further added that they reserve the right to evaluate what steps will be taken next regarding the player.

Monza’s official statement on Papu Gomez

Papu Gomez, a free agent after leaving Sevilla in September, joined AC Monza this season. He watched Sevilla win the UEFA Europa League from the bench last year and played only twice in Argentina’s World Cup run. His contract with Monza is until 2024, but a ban might cut it short.

Now 35, this two-year ban could prompt his retirement. Gomez’s suspension, resulting from a failed drug test, marks the second Serie A ban this season after Paul Pogba’s case.

Fans react to Papu Gomez’s two-year ban from football

Papu Gomez’s recent failed drug test puts him in a tough situation. Fortunately, it won’t impact his club or country’s success due to the World Anti-Doping Code’s Article 11. This rule states that a team won’t lose titles unless more than two players fail a drug test.

However, the situation for the player himself is less clear. Gomez played for Sevilla in the Europa League against Manchester United and Juventus in the quarter-finals and semi-finals. He also participated in the World Cup matches against Saudi Arabia and Australia.

Papu Gomez’s career may come to an unexpected and sad end after his failed doping test. Fans, however, will remember the player and his tenure with Atalanta leading the club to its highest-ever league position – 3rd place in Serie A which they repeated one season later – and their dream run in the UEFA Champions League which ended due to a last minute goal from PSG.
