Wolverhampton Wanderers and West Bromwich Albion have shared a rivalry spanning close to 150 years. The Black Country Derby, the name given to the rivalry between the two clubs and Walsall, was finally played after 3 years.
The local rivals were drawn against each other in the FA Cup round 4, with The Hawthorns hosting the fixture. Pedro Neto opened the scoring for Wolves, after a sensational shot from outside the box thanks to a counterattack. Subsequently, Matheus Cunha doubled the lead in the 78th minute as Max Kilman’s wonderful ball found the attacker.
As the team celebrated the goal, a small brawl began in the stands between the West Brom fans and Wolves fans. According to reports, it started after a Wolves fan in the home end started celebrating. It got violent, with the stewards and police attempting to stop the violence. Referee Thomas Bramall had to suspend play, as the fans began to invade the pitch.
West Brom defender, Kyle Bartley, had to help get kids out of the stands to ensure no one was hurt. The players walked back to the dressing room and returned to the field after 38 minutes. Nothing substantial occurred as Wolves ended the fixture moving to the 5th round of the FA Cup.
Meanwhile, the FA released a statement regarding the clashes. It read that the conduct of fans was unacceptable. Further, adding that the safety of fans was of utmost importance and they will work to get justice.
Moreover, this clash is the 2nd time fans have caused problems. Earlier, a fan chased the referee during Port Vale and Portsmouth’s League One fixture.
