Villarreal’s Nicolas Jackson has been officially signed by Chelsea on a long-term contract on Friday. The Senegal forward’s £30 million release clause was reportedly slightly exceeded by the Blues in order to sign their second player of the 2023 summer transfer window. Jackson commits to an extensive eight-year deal.
In 2020, the 21-year-old made his way to Villarreal. Prior to joining the first team in 2021, he played for Villarreal B. Since then, he has scored 13 goals and recorded six assists in 47 appearances. After offensive struggles the previous season, Jackson joins a Chelsea team that is in need of reinforcement.
We are excited to welcome Nicolas to Chelsea. He is a young player with big potential, as he showcased for Villarreal last season. We believe he is ready for this next step in his career and look forward to him working with our new head coach, Mauricio Pochettino, and his Chelsea team-mates.Chelsea’s co-sporting directors Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley said after the player’s signing.
It’s interesting to note that Nicolas Jackson came quite close to signing with a different Premier League team at first. The 22-year-old was on the verge of joining Bournemouth from Villarreal in January, but the move fell through due to doubts about a hamstring injury the player had sustained. Jackson’s South Coast medical was a failure.
