Coming into Aston Villa’s match with Manchester United, many expected this to be yet another easy game for them. After all, the Red Devils failed to score in 4 games, while Villa had gone 10 games unbeaten. Unfortunately, both of these streaks were finally broken.

Aston Villa scored their first two goals in the first half, with John McGinn scoring a free kick in the 21st minute and Leander Dedondecker scoring just 7 minutes later. United struggled to score, but finally found the back of the net in the 50th minute after Alejandro Garnacho scored. However, that was ruled out as the forward was offside.

Being 2-0 down for over 2/3rd of the match, United started their comeback in the 59th minute after Garnacho finally scored. The disallowed goal worked like a wake-up call for them, as the intensity of United’s pressing increased tenfold. Garnacho equalized 12 minutes after his first goal and the chances of the team completing their comeback looked possible.

The winner finally came from a set piece, scored by Rasmus Hojlund. Hojlund, who had gone over 1000 minutes without a single Premier League goal, finally found the back of the net. Bruno Fernandes took a corner and McGinn failed to deal with the ball. It deflected off his thigh and the Danish striker slotted the ball past Emiliano Martinez. The game finished 3-2, with United winning their first match in over 20 days.

Fans react to Rasmus Hojlund’s miracle goal

In the past few months, Hojlund has been compared to Australian singer Sean Ellis after each goalless performance. Ellis’s song, Waiting on a Miracle, went viral due to the famous meme. Now with Hojlund finally scoring, many fans have joked that this goal would ruin the singer’s popularity.

Meanwhile, other fans were happy with their victory, with Hojlund’s goal making it more exciting. Others joked how Emi Martinez ensured Garnacho scored the goals as he helped an international teammate.

Check out some of the fans’ reactions:

With this win, Manchester United went above Newcastle United and West Ham. They are currently 3 points behind Manchester City, who are 5th in the table, but with 2 games more. Aston Villa are now 3 points below Table topper Liverpool, who had beaten Burnley earlier in the day. If Tottenham beat Brighton by 3 goals, Villa could drop down to 4th place.
