FIFA is reportedly going to introduce ‘blue’ cards in football for a trial period next season, with players being removed for ten minutes if they are judged to have committed a cynical foul or showed dissent towards an official.
The international football governing authority has decided to introduce the ‘sin-bin’ system from the ongoing season, including temporary player suspensions during matches. While the concept of sin-bin is well-established in other sports like rugby and handball, this plan has faced significant criticism. It would be an added burden on the referees, who are still dealing with the inconsistencies of the VAR system.
The system is proposed to begin through an initial trial process in the English FA Cup next season, where players will start receiving blue cards. Two blue cards will be equivalent to one red card during a match, while one yellow and one blue card will also result in a red card.
Football experts and analysts have expressed concerns that implementing this rule could grant excessive power to match officials, potentially leading to numerous incorrect decisions. Fans pointed out the complexity of the system, with many stressing that the original yellow-red card rules are the most suitable ones.
Netizens and football fans react to FIFA’s decision to implement ‘blue’ card rule
Internet users and football enthusiasts reacted to the recent news of FIFA deciding to implement ‘blue’ card rule on trial from the upcoming season. The card which will see players getting removed from the pitch for 10 minutes if they commit a cynical foul or argue with the officials, has been deemed illogical by fans.
Fans shared their reactions to ‘X’. One fan angrily stated that the governing body was ruining the game day after day, by introducing such rules and norms. Another fan jokingly remarked that if such a rule were implemented, La Liga team Atletico Madrid would consistently be left with only five players on the field.
Some of the ‘X’ reactions have been shared:
One fan pointed out that matches would turn less entertaining if such a rule is placed because teams would often start playing defensively whenever a player is sidelined for ten minutes unless the player is back onto the pitch.
