Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes was criticized by football fans for his antics during the club’s 2-1 loss to Fulham. He was labeled as a ‘cheat’ after a clip depicting the player falling on the ground to imitate an injury to earn a free-kick went viral.
The 29-year-old midfielder, who had been one of the Red Devils’ best performers over the past few seasons, is currently experiencing a massive downfall in his form. However, the Portuguese faced further scrutiny after United’s disappointing 2-1 defeat to Fulham. He was slammed for his play-acting during the closing stages of the match. Moreover, he was also criticized for engaging in a heated exchange with referee Michael Oliver post-match.
The video of the United captain feigning an injury went viral on social media. Following Harry Maguire‘s equalizer in the 89th minute, Bruno advanced towards the Fulham defense and attempted a left-footed shot from 30 yards out. After his shot was saved, he exaggeratedly fell to the ground, mocking pain and signaling for a foul by Fulham’s Sasa Lukic. He clutched his ankle in agony, appealing for a free-kick, but referee Oliver ignored his plea.
Eventually, the Portuguese got back on his feet, with no sign of injury and resumed playing. However, his actions drew significant criticism, particularly as United ultimately lost the match. Alex Iwobi‘s 97th-minute goal secured a dramatic victory for Fulham over the Red Devils.
