The history of Total Football- from Herbert Chapman to Johan Cruyff.
Total Football has been a Integral part of Dutch football and Barcelona gameplay since ages. The concept came to existence in 1930. English football player Herbert Chapman is called the father of Total Football.
Herbert Chapman used this technique in Arsenal and won the Championship title. The River Plate team saw a similar technique through coach Carlos Peucelle. Gustav Sebes used the technique in Hungary national team and gained success.
It was then that Rinus Michels, the Dutch International playing and coaching for Ajax used the technique. Total football gained importance from Europe to America in a short span of time.
Joham Cruyff learned this technique from Herbert Chapman and Rinus Michels. He implemented and modified it and used it in Barcelona. The style was later adapted by tactician Pep Guardiola and his students Mikel Arteta and Xavi. The concept which speaks and teaches how to defend, hold possession and score has been the most effective tactic in football history.
