Just 3 minutes into the National Women’s Soccer League Championship game, former USWNT player Megan Rapinoe was subbed off after suffering an ‘Achilles’ injury. The 38-year-old was escorted off the pitch with the help of the medical staff and was replaced by OL Reigns striker, Bethany Balcer.

Megan Rapinoe got hurt early in the game without being touched by another player. She tried to change direction while defending, and that’s when it happened. Non-contact injuries are usually more concerning, so she had to leave the game. Two medical staff helped her. Sadly, it was her last professional game, and she got a big round of applause as she left the field.

Gotham FC ran out 2-1 winners against OL Reigns on the night which meant that Megan Rapinoe’s fairytale ending of winning an NWSL Championship remains unfulfilled. Rapinoe revealed that she was more upset about messing up the team’s tactics rather than worrying about it being her last game as a professional player. She said:

When asked about how she felt about how her career ended Rapinoe mentioned her disappointment of not being able to be on the pitch during her final moments regardless of the win or loss.

With her final post-match conference coming to a close, Megan Rapinoe has finally retired after a career spanning more than a decade saw her lift the Women’s World Cup two times (2015, 2019).

While Megan Rapinoe remains a controversial figure for her actions outside of the pitch, her actions on it have led to several players having massive respect for the 38-year-old. A Golden Ball and Golden Boot winner in the 2019 World Cup for the USWNT has been immense for the growth of women’s soccer in the United States of America.
