Lionel Messi started his MLS journey with a bang, as he scored a brace and gave an assist. This led his team Inter Miami to win 4-0 against Atlanta United. His first goal came after barely eight minutes of play. He then doubled the lead in the 22nd minute with an assist from Finnish teammate Robert Taylor.
In the 44th minute, Taylor scored another goal. This led to Miami being 3-0 up at halftime and almost winning the match. Finally, Lionel Messi gave an assist to Taylor in the 53rd minute to extend the score to 4-0. The World Cup winner was subbed off during the 78th minute after arguably dropping one of his best performances of the year. The crowd gave him a standing ovation as they witnessed a marvelous sight in the field.
This was Leo Messi’s debut start in MLS, but he already played his first match for the team on Friday as they faced Cruz Azul in the League Cup. There, he came on as a substitute and scored an injury time winner through an unstoppable free kick to win the game 2-1.
The arrival of the former FC Barcelona forward could mean a transforming era for the Florida-based club. The club is very new, having played its first game back in 2020. But their record since then has not been good, as they languish at the bottom of the table in the Eastern Conference. If Messi can keep contributing to their wins, it could all change pretty quickly.
