“Football heritage”- Fans jump in joy as Barcelona lifts La Liga after three years under Xavi Hernandez

Barcelona added a domestic double as they win both La Liga and Copa de Espana despite financial hurdles.

Barcelona have won La Liga for the first time since 2019. Their 4-2 victory over city rivals Espanyol secured Xavi the trophy in his first full season as manager of the club he won eight league titles with as a player. Goals from Robert Lewandowski, Alejandro Balde and Jules Kounde wrapped up the title. They have cruised 14 points above arch-rivals Real Madrid.

It has been a mixed season for Barcelona after they were knocked out of the Champions League at the group stage and then crashed out of the Europa League against Manchester United, but they have sealed their first league title in four years. Despite their on-field success domestically this season, Barcelona is dealing with financial difficulties. The club has had to pull several economic levers to remain above water in recent years and is still dealing with a hefty wage bill.

President Joan Laporta’s rebuild was widely criticized last summer in light of the club’s perilous financial situation. Early Champions League elimination was a blow, but the club won the Spanish Super Cup in January, before sealing La Liga glory with four games to spare. “It’s a magnificent feeling of work well done,” Xavi said. “Ten months of work and sacrifice. The fans deserve it, the club, it gives us stability and security that things are being done well.

Xavi did not spring any surprises with his line-up and Barcelona’s first team took to the pitch with one goal firmly in mind, the end finally in sight. They conjured an electric display, one of their finest this season, to seal their triumph and leave their city rivals 19th, four points from safety with four matches remaining. “We sealed La Liga with a fantastic game, we were brilliant,” commented the coach.
