In an intense Europa League semi-final first leg clash at the Stadio Olimpico, Italian giants AS Roma overcame Bayer Leverkusen of Germany 1-0 to put one foot in the final. Both sides fought fiercely on the pitch, giving everything they had to secure a victory.
Roma’s goal came in the second half, courtesy of a 20-year-old rising star, Edoardo Bove, who scored his first ever European goal to send the home fans into a frenzy. Bove charged through midfield with the ball at his feet and played a clever pass to Tammy Abraham, who took a shot at goal that was initially saved by Leverkusen goalkeeper Lukas Hradecky. However, Bove was quick to react and slammed the ball back into the net on the rebound, giving Roma a precious lead.
After taking the lead, Jose Mourinho’s men defended resolutely for the remainder of the match, with every player giving their all to protect their hard-earned advantage. The manager has recently attracted interest from Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea, which will no doubt surely increase after yet another successful European night.
One standout moment came in the 87th minute, when Bryan Cristante produced a stunning goal-line block with his chest to save his team’s lead. Patricio and Roger Ibanez were spared their blushes after they collided, leading to a shot towards goal by Jeremie Frimpong. However, Cristante was on hand to produce a vital intervention and helped secure the victory.

Fans praise Jose Mourinho
It was a performance typical of a Jose Mourinho side. The Leverkusen players threw everything they had at the Italians in the final minutes of the match, but they were unable to find a way through thanks to some heroic defending by the Giallorossi.
The Portuguese led Roma to a UEFA Conference League title last season, and has helped the club reached their third successive European semi-final as well. He will be hoping to win the Europa League title once again. Mourinho won the competition previously with Manchester United in 2017.
