Real Madrid went into half-time 1-0 up in their Champions League quarter-final first-leg tie against Chelsea. Karim Benzema tapped in a simple rebound to give Los Blancos the lead in the 27th minute.
The home side started the game strongly. N’golo Kante sent Joao Felix through on goal untouched, but he was forced wide by Eduardo Camavinga. The shot was parried wide by Thibaut Courtois. Chelsea had another great chance to open the scoring just two minutes after Kante sent Felix through with another great pass. However, the Portuguese’s pass to Raheem Sterling was cleared by Eder Militao.
Real Madrid had their first chance of the game in the 12th minute. Benzema and Rodrygo linked up well, leading to a fierce strike from the Frenchman straight at Kepa Arrizabalaga. Los Blancos opened the scoring after some great work by Dani Carvajal. The right-back chipped the ball over the Chelsea defence, with Vinicius racing in behind at speed. The Brazilian stretched to flick the ball goalwards, and Kepa parried the ball straight into Benzema’s path for an easy goal.
Chelsea continued to threaten, with Courtois making a fantastic reflex save to deny Sterling from kickoff. Real Madrid hit back with a great chance of their own minutes later. Vinicius Jr. brilliantly chipped the ball over goalkeeper Kepa after dribbling past Wesley Fofana. However, Thiago Silva cleared the ball off the line. Real Madrid continued to create chances until the end of the first half but could not convert.

Fans react to Karim Benzema scoring for Real Madrid
Karim Benzema has been in fine form for Real Madrid in the Champions League, scoring four goals and contributing one assist in seven appearances, averaging a goal every 113 minutes. Interestingly, the Frenchman has scored three of his four goals with his weak foot. Benzema has also been in fine form for Los Blancos in La Liga, scoring 14 goals and providing three assists in just 18 matches.
After taking home the prestigious award last year, the 35-year-old will be looking to win another Ballon d’Or. Going deep in the Champions League will undoubtedly aid his efforts, and he has done an excellent job so far in the competition.
