EFL Championship side Leeds United’s official Instagram shared a hilarious video of club legend David Batty ‘toying’ with the former Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo, during a Premier League match between the two English rivals back in 2003. The sole purpose was to wish David Batty on his 55th birthday. But with a sly dig aimed at Ronnie via caption.
David Batty played as a defensive midfielder and made over 300 appearances for Leeds United starting from 1987 to 2004. Following his retirement in 2004, the midfielder has lived a life away from the media spotlight.
In a recent Instagram video from Leeds United, David Batty repeatedly stopped Cristiano Ronaldo, as expected due to his physical style. Despite multiple chances, Ronaldo couldn’t get past Batty, showcasing a rare rough defensive approach not often seen today. Batty used tough tackles, including shoulder blocks and taps on the back of the head, creating a robust display of old-school football.
The video was shared to wish David Batty on the occasion of his 55th birthday. Further, the club’s social media admin even said it with a ‘cheeky’ caption.

Although the video received a lot of viewership on Instagram, it left fans in splits. While a section of supporters criticized Batty’s playful antics, there are majority who appreciated the club’s bantering.

What could have just been a ‘birthday wish’ for the club legend, took a whole new bantering turn when fans started taking shots at each other under the comment section of the video.
The video stirred mixed reactions from fans of both English clubs. One viewer felt it aimed to embarrass Cristiano Ronaldo, while another pointed out Ronaldo’s superior Champions League record compared to Leeds United’s struggles. Criticism labeled Batty as a ‘dirty’ player, yet a Leeds supporter accused Ronaldo of being a ‘diver.’ Amidst it all, one user sarcastically welcomed Ronaldo to the ‘big school.’
Meanwhile, a fan appreciated his club’s [Leeds] efforts of posting such a reel and wrote that this is ‘Leeds Shithousery’. The comment section’s heat, apart from the threats and derogatory remarks, is a representation of the clubs’ rivalry per se, all for banter, in a light-hearted tone.
