“We can just pack our bags now”- Fans left disappointed with USWNT’s performance against Portugal in 2023 FIFA World Cup after Alex Morgan misses an easy chance
The defending champions were almost shocked by a late effort from the Portuguese team which hit the post, saving them from elimination.

The USA was held by Portugal to a 0-0 draw in the Women’s World Cup. It was the first time they failed to score in the group stage of the tournament since 2015. Both teams had decent chances but struggled to finish it. In the end, the match turned out to be a bit of a letdown for the supporters. However, the Portuguese team almost shocked them with an injury-time chance.
Alex Morgan got her first chance of the game from a cross in the 3rd minute by Lynn Williams, which she couldn’t manage to finish. She got another chance, this time from Lindsey Horan, but the shot went wide. The American women got a great chance after Sophia Smith crossed the ball to Williams, whose header was saved by Ines Pereira, the Portuguese goalkeeper.
Portugal then retaliated when Jessica Silva was presented with a chance where she only had to beat the goalkeeper. But the shot was off-target. Portugal held the ball better than the defending champions but did not manage to find too many chances. The USWNT almost scored in the 54th minute through a shot by Morgan, but it was cleared off the line. Portugal’s chance, however, almost sealed a shock result.
In the dying minutes, Ana Capeta, who came off the bench in the 90th minute, produced a strong shot after beating the defense. However, the ball hit the post despite a great effort. This shocked the internet, as it could have knocked the defending champions out of the tournament if it was just inches closer.

In the end, the US qualified for the Round of 16, while Portugal was eliminated despite a great effort. The internet reacted by saying the performance by the champions was not upto the mark. Many were in shock after the late Portugal effort did not go in. Here are some of the reactions:
Alex Morgan had numerous chances in the whole game but squandered them all. It was a very frustrating night for her, as she just couldn’t manage to find the back of the net. This is very unlike her, as she has scored 121 goals for her country so far. This might be the main reason for their struggles throughout the tournament.
