Manchester United drew 0-0 with Southampton at Old Trafford after playing 60 minutes of the game with ten men. Casemiro got a straight red card for the second time in six weeks when he went studs up into Southampton attacking midfielder Carlos Alcaraz. However, VAR advised referee Anthony Taylor to change the decision from a yellow to a red card, and the Brazilian had to leave the field.
Casemiro will now be suspended for 4 games since this is the second red card he has received this season. Casemiro was previously sent off on February 4th after he put his hands around Mark Hughes’ throat. Manchester United began the game with an interesting lineup, with Bruno Fernandes playing a more defensive role in central midfield. Jadon Sancho started as an attacking midfielder. After the red card, central striker Wout Weghorst went off for the more defensive Scott McTominay.
The second half was a much more exciting affair, with both teams hitting the woodwork a total of 3 times combined. James Ward-Prowse shot on a beautiful free kick that looked destined for the top corner, only to hit the post. Bruno Fernandes smashed a glorious shot toward the bottom right corner, but Southampton goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu made a super save to deny him. Then, Kyle Walker-Peters lashed a stinging shot straight onto David de Gea’s right goalpost.
Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag brought on youngsters Facundo Pellistri and Alejandro Garnacho to provide some threat, however, that did not prove to be the case. The result means Manchester United is only 2 points ahead of Tottenham Hotspur. Meanwhile, at the other end of the table, Southampton remains 20th and remains in the midst of a relegation dogfight.
