In a must-win match for Manchester United, they traveled to Turkey to play Galatasaray. In the previous 4 matches, they won 3 points, with the possibility of relocating to the Europa League, or worse, elimination. The Red Devils began strong, scoring 2 in the first 19 minutes, and finished the half with a free kick conceded after a mistake by Andre Onana.
The real problem began in the 2nd half. Scott McTominay’s goal in the 55th minute got the score to 3-1, but another disastrous mistake by Onana cost them 2 points. Hakim Ziyech, who had scored Galatasaray’s first goal, got a free kick in the 62nd minute on the right flank.
Shooting with his left foot, the ball landed right in front of Andre Onana, who somehow failed to collect it. The ball bounced off of him and rolled into the goal, getting Galatasaray’s 2nd goal.
Muhammed Kerem Aktürkoğlu’s wonder goal in the 71st minute ensured both sides left the fixture with only a point each. This draw is bad news for Manchester United, as their chances of advancing to the round of 16 have taken a tremendous hit.
Now with 4 points out of the 5 played, they are one point behind Galatasaray and FC Copenhagen, if they manage to draw with Bayern Munich. Their next match in the Champions League will be against group favorites, Bayern Munich, at Old Trafford.
Andre Onana is blamed for United’s bottle job as they find themselves bottom of their group
With United conceding 3 goals against Galatasaray, they have now become the side with the most goals conceded, with 13 out of 5 games. They have kept only a single clean sheet throughout the tournament as well, which came in their win over Copenhagen.
Many fans were furious at Onana for his mistakes. Fans blamed the keeper for their poor form in the Champions League, saying he single-handedly got them knocked out. Many called for him to be dropped while others wanted him out of the club.
Check out some of the fans’ reactions below:
With this draw United find themselves bottom of their group, as long as Copenhagen and Bayern Munich draw their match. If the Danish side manages to win, United will mathematically fail to qualify for the Round of 16, with only a chance at Europa League glory being available. If Bayern win, United could still go through, as long as they beat Bayern while the other two teams drop points.
