Real Madrid legend Sergio Ramos has hung up his boots from international football after winning it all with the Spanish national team. The 36-year-old defender announced that he would be retiring this year. Ramos is the most-capped player in the history of Spain, having played over 180 matches for his national side.

The time has come, the time to say goodbye to the national team. This morning I received the call from the current coach who told me that he doesn’t count and that he won’t count on me, regardless of the level I can show or how I continue my sporting career,” the PSG defender announced. Sergio Ramos wasn’t called up for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, as Spanish manager Luis Enrique wanted to have younger options than the veteran defender.

One of the most decorated defenders of all time, Ramos insinuated that he was wrongly judged just because of his age. “Humbly, I think my career deserved to end because of a personal decision or because of my performance. Not because of age or other reasons,” Ramos added.

The veteran hadn’t made an appearance for Spain since March 2021. Spain’s captain Sergio Busquets failed to establish his leadership in the team, eventually crashing out of the Qatar World Cup after losing to Morocco on penalties. The Spanish federation sacked Luis Enrique after the Spaniard failed to make a huge impact on the national team.
