Fans were delirious as Vinicius Jr. scored a spectacular goal in Real Madrid’s Champions League first-leg game against Manchester City. The Brazilian gave Madrid the lead in the 36th minute.
It was an incredible piece of play from the Brazilian to open the scoring. Luka Modric and Eduardo Camavinga combined in their half before the Frenchman drove up the pitch with the ball. He laid it off to Vinicius, who unleashed a thunderous strike from the edge of the box into the top-right corner. Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson had no chance as Los Blancos took the lead against the run of play.
The away side dominated much of the ball for the first half, testing Real goalie Thibaut Courtois on multiple occasions. Midfielder Rodri and record breaker Erling Haaland tested the keeper thrice in three minutes, but the Belgian stood firm.
Vinicius’ goal injected some much-needed energy and confidence into the Real Madrid side, who had been struggling to break down Manchester City. It was also a reminder of the attacking threat that Real Madrid possessed, with the likes of Vinicius, Modric, and Camavinga all capable of creating and scoring goals out of nothing.

Fans react to Vinicius’ outrageous finish

Real Madrid and Manchester City have faced each other eight times previously. Both clubs have three wins, with two ending in draws. However, Los Blancos have been far more successful in the UEFA Champions League, winning it a record 14 times. This success has been built on a foundation of exceptional talent, both on the pitch and the sidelines, with legendary manager Zinedine Zidane leading the club to three consecutive titles between 2016 and 2018.
On the other hand, Manchester City have never won the competition despite consistently reaching the knockout rounds. This has led to frustration among City fans, who have seen their team come agonizingly close to glory on several occasions, only to fall short at the final hurdle. Supporters will be hoping the curse can finally be lifted, with the second leg in Manchester promising to be a fiery affair.
