Lionel Messi was recently unveiled as an Inter Miami player on Sunday. A 20,000-strong crowd was present at the DRV PNK Stadium in Miami to welcome the legendary Argentine. After the ceremony, David Beckham, the co-owner of Inter Miami made a claim that Messi’s unveiling was watched by an incredible 3.5 billion people around the globe.
However, fans on social media seem unconvinced by this statistic. Beckham stated that the Argentine’s welcoming was watched by half of the world. His claim puts Messi’s unveiling above Saudi Arabia’s claim of Cristiano Ronaldo being watched by 3 billion people as he was welcomed by Al Nassr.
Messi’s unveiling becomes the most watched unveiling of a football player if the numbers are true. However, fans are not convinced by this statistic. Neither has any streaming partner of the MLS confirmed the actual numbers behind Messi’s unveiling. Fans took to Twitter to express their doubts about the claim. David Beckham’s claim was questioned by many people.
Regardless of the numbers, Messi did receive a hero’s welcome in Miami. The DRV PNK crowd stayed despite rain and delays to celebrate the arrival of one of the best players in the game. The Miami faithful have their hopes tied to Messi as he aims to turn around the fortunes of the South Beach club.
Here’s how Twitter reacted to David Beckham’s claim of Messi’s unveiling numbers
Twitter users could not fathom the claim made by David Beckham. A lot of fans trolled David Beckham for his comments. Fans were quick to make some points to contradict his claim.
Fans also crunched some numbers in order to defame the claim. People quizzed Beckham about his reasons for lying about the numbers. Some fans had theories that the counts could have been miscounted. Here are some of the reactions from Twitter-
Lionel Messi would however not be worried about the whole numbers fiasco. The Argentine has shown often he likes to show his work on the field. He has hit the ground running and has started practice with teammates including the new arrival but old comrade, Sergio Busquets. Messi is hopeful to make his debut for the club in their next match against Cruz Azul on 21st July in the Leagues Cup.
