Barcelona lifted the La Liga trophy in front of the Camp Nou faithful despite a 1-2 loss to Real Sociedad prior to winning the competition with games to spare. They have secured their first league title since 2019, as Xavi’s charges held off their rivals in 2023, to finally clinch the trophy. On the back of a title parade through the city’s streets last week, Barcelona were formally presented with the trophy after their La Liga defeat to Real Sociedad.

A first home league loss of the campaign was a source of frustration for Xavi but he put his disappointment in the performance to one side at full time. As part of a passionate post-match speech, the former midfielder hailed the fans, for their firm support across a demanding season, as the party kicked off in Catalonia. With three games left, fourth-placed Real Sociedad moved on to 65 points and tightened their grip on the last Champions League qualification spot.

Barcelona lifted its first league trophy after Lionel Messi’s departure with a 4-2 victory at Espanyol on Sunday in a match marred by Espanyol fans storming the pitch at the end of the game and forcing Barcelona players to head for the locker room. Robert Lewandowski scored twice to lead the Catalan club to its first league title since 2019. The title was secured with four rounds remaining and two years after Messi left amid the club’s financial struggles.

The last time Barcelona celebrated a league title without Messi in its squad was back in 1998-99. He came into the first team in 2004-05 and won the title that season. Barcelona can now ease over the line in the final weeks of the season, with trips to relegation battling Real Valladolid and Celta Vigo, in between a final home tie of 2022/23 against Mallorca.

Barcelona now has 27 league titles, eight fewer than Real Madrid. Barcelona has led since the 13th round and holds the league’s best defense with 13 goals conceded, 14 better than any other club. It also has 25 clean sheets. “It’s a magnificent feeling, a feeling of job well done,” Xavi said. “This is important to give the club’s project some stability. The league title shows that things have been done the right way and that we have to stay on this path.
