“Snatch all trophies; Corrupt and still broke”- Fans react as Barcelona gets booked for corruption

According to reports, Barcelona is charged with corruption over payments made to the former vice president of Spain’s referees’ committee. The club was accused of having a close relationship with Jose Maria Enriquez Negreira, who held the position, to influence matches that would favor the Blaugranas in exchange for money. About £6.46 million was paid to DASNIL and NILSAT, two companies owned by Negreira.

This resulted in analyzing the previous matches in which referees favored Barcelona such as the infamous Barcelona vs Chelsea match in 2009 in the Champions League where the officiating referee seemed to turn down a certain four Chelsea penalty appeals on the night which resulted in the Catalan Giants qualifying for the next round of the competition.

Barcelona issued a statement admitting to having contracted the services of an ‘external’ consultant who provided reports related to professional refereeing in order to complement information required by the coaching staff, something that it said was ‘common practice in professional football clubs’ but condemns any acts of fraud involved.

“Barca has never bought referees and Barca has never had any intention of buying referees. Absolutely never. The forcefulness of the facts contradicts those who try to change the story.’ says the club’s current president Joan Laporta. The club could face huge financial penalties, and the individuals allegedly involved could face up to four years in jail if found to be guilty.

After the recent outburst of La Liga president Javier Tebas over Barcelona’s ban in the upcoming transfer window, the Blaugranas are hoping to raise funds if they are to improve the squad. The club has sold most of its assets and player sales is the only reliable option if they are to sign anyone.

According to reports, Ansu Fati and Ferran Torres are linked with a move away from the club after poor performances for the club. Torres’s start with the Catalan Giants was impressive, but he has since fallen down the pecking order and lost his place of trust with the Camp Nou faithful as well.

As for Ansu Fati, the player has failed to live up to the mark and carry Lionel Messi’s legacy forward after acquiring his legendary number 10 shirt when the Argentine moved to PSG. The Spaniard had been dealing with injury issues and was barely available over the last two seasons and looks a shadow of his former self. Barca will hope to sell these players to balance their hurdles and secure the future of the club.
