Cristiano Ronaldo might face a serious penalty of ’99 lashes’ for hugging Iranian artist Fatima Hamimi, who gave him a portrait during his visit to Iran as part of the Al-Nassr squad for the AFC Champions League.
This information comes from an Iranian news source called ‘Sharq Emroz’. They report that Iranian lawyers have filed complaints about Ronaldo’s affectionate actions, such as a kiss on the cheek and a hug while taking a photo. These actions are considered violations of Iranian law, seen as a form of adultery. If the Portuguese star visits Iran again, the prescribed punishment is ’99 lashes’. (H/T: Mundo Deportivo)
Now, the match in Iran against Persepolis F.C. has already happened. So, Ronaldo doesn’t have to go to Iran. However, if Al-Nassr makes it to the later stages of the AFC Champions League and gets paired with an Iranian team, they might have to keep Ronaldo out of the game because he’s in trouble with the country.
On another note, there’s Fatima Hamimi, an Iranian artist who’s 85 percent paralyzed and paints using her feet. Their planned friendly meeting might turn into a situation where Ronaldo can never visit Iran again.
Twitter Reacts to Cristiano Ronaldo’s potential punishment
A person who commits adultery in Iran is either on the receiving end of 100 lashes or even dead for the fourth offense. With Cristiano Ronaldo now finding himself in a situation where his punishment is of this magnitude, fans online are confused about the entire debacle.
Many have chosen not to take the issue too seriously as Ronaldo is too big of a name to be punished in such a manner. However, some have criticized the player for not respecting the rules and regulations of the countries he visits.
Here are some of the reactions:
Cristiano Ronaldo is currently in the clear of being ‘cleared’ as the rule can only be applied if he visits the nation again. This season, 2 teams represent Iran, Persepolis F.C. and Sepahan S.C. While Al-Nassr has already made their trip to face the former, the possibility remains of drawing the latter in the case of both teams qualifying.
However, with Sepahan S.C. currently third in the group and facing Saudi club Al-Ittihad next, the team from Iran may struggle to get out of the group stage should they fail to win this match. Sepahan has never made it past the AFC Champions League Group Stage since 2012.
