Cristiano Ronaldo‘s brace against Bosnia and Herzegovina has brought his goal tally for the calendar year to 40, the most in 2023 and one more than Norwegian striker, Erling Haaland. Portugal’s UEFA Euro Qualifier against Bosnia and Herzegovina saw the Al-Nassr forward score a penalty for his first goal and chip the goalkeeper on the second in the first half of the game.

Bringing his calendar year tally to 40, Cristiano Ronaldo currently holds the record for most goals scored in 2023. The Portuguese International is in stellar goal-scoring form at the age of 38, averaging a goal every 94 minutes with 40 goals in 43 appearances. With two games left in the Euro qualifier campaign, the player is on the hunt to end the competition as the top scorer as he trails behind Belgium’s Romelu Lukaku by one goal.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s performances have also earned him plaudits from his peers, as it has many times over his 20-year career. Manchester United midfielder and Portuguese compatriot Bruno Fernandes spoke on his teammate, “I hope another Portuguese Cristiano Ronaldo appears but, I think it’s unlikely.”

Portugal’s Manager, Roberto Martinez also emphasised the importance of having a character like Cristiano whose experience can bring the best out of the National Team players.

With qualification into UEFA Euro 2024 confirmed, Cristiano could be on his way to his sixth and final Euro of his career. Cristiano Ronaldo will make his next appearance on the pitch in the Saudi Pro League game against Damas FC followed by Al-Duhail in the AFC Champions League.

At the age of 38, Cristiano Ronaldo is currently the highest goal-scoring player in World Football this year. An incredible 40 goals have seen the player surpass the likes of Man City’s Haaland and PSG’s Kylian Mbappe‘s current goal tally. With over two months remaining till the end of the year, will the Portuguese be able to maintain his incredible form? At this point in time, Cristiano has shown no signs of slowing down.

Due to his age, conversations about Cristiano’s retirement have come up on several occasions. While the Portuguese International has not given an exact time on when it will happen he has replied, “People say I’m going to play on until I’m 40 or 41 years old. I don’t set these targets. It’s a question of just enjoying the moment, which is a good moment.” Assuring the fans he will appear in the Euro 2024 and the 2026 World Cup two years later, Cristiano could hold off on hanging up his boots for now.
