“Give this beast the Ballon D’Or; Born to score goals” – Fans react as Erling Haaland breaks record for most goals scored in a single PL season against West Ham United

Erling Haaland broke the record for the most goals in a single English top flight season as Manchester City overcame West Ham United 2-0 in a hard-fought encounter at the Etihad Stadium. Nathan Ake scored the other goal with a well-taken header at the far post early on in the first half.

The record was set by Dixie Dean, who scored 34 goals in 1927-28. Andy Cole and Alan Shearer matched the record in 1993-94 and 1994-95, respectively. Incredibly, all three did it in 42 game seasons, while Haaland has broken the record in just 34 games. He has scored 51 goals in all competitions, with 35 being scored at the Etihad Stadium. It is the highest number of goals a Premier League player scored in a single home campaign.

The home side had a productive first half, creating good chances for Rodri and Erling Haaland. However, neither could convert. Nathan Ake broke the deadlock in the 50th minute with a low header past Lukasz Fabianski from a Riyad Mahrez free-kick.

The goal boosted City’s confidence, and they increased the tempo, attempting to kill the game off. The Hammers defended well and carried some threat of their own. However, they were unable to create any meaningful chances. Haaland’s record-breaking effort came in the 70th minute. He effortlessly chipped the West Ham goalkeeper following a through ball from Grealish. Phil Foden added a third late on with a deflected long-range effort.

City will look to finish the season strongly with games against Everton, Chelsea, Brighton and Brentford still to come. However, they will also have one eye on their Champions League tie against Real Madrid, with the first leg taking place on May 10 and the second leg on May 18.

West Ham fans will be nervous about their remaining fixtures, which include tough games against Manchester United, Brentford, Leeds and Leicester. However, with a four-point cushion over the relegation zone, they remain in a good position to secure their top-flight status for another season.
