Real Madrid in action against Barcelona

After conquering Anfield in the Champions League clash last Wednesday, Real Madrid failed to carry forward their momentum and drew 1-1 against Atletico Madrid in the Madrid Derby on Saturday. However, the draw is not much different from a loss as the Los Blancos currently face a threat of a possible 10-point deficit to Barcelona if the Catalans win their La Liga clash against Almeria tomorrow.

Another intriguing thing to note is the fact that Real Madrid drew against Atletico Madrid even after they were one man down. They lost Angel Correa in the 64th minute when the referee sent him off for intentionally elbowing Antonio Rudiger. However, the Los Blancos can be somewhat happy provided they were down 0-1 after the 78th minute when Jose Maria Gimenez scored a beautiful header from a pass from the corner spot.

In the time of need, youngster Alvaro proved to be Real Madrid’s messiah as he equalized the scoreline in the 85th minute after scoring yet another stunning header. However, despite getting five minutes in extra time and their opponents being a man down, the Los Blancos failed to convert this into a victory.

Just like the commentators which stated that a draw or a loss necessarily means the same thing for Real Madrid at this moment, fans also expressed their anger on the Los Blancos’ gameplay and poor shooting skills. While Karim Benzema and Vinicius Jr. looked out of form, Marco Asensio and Fede Valverde failed to convert multiple good chances into goals.

As a result, the same fans, who were all in seventh heaven after Real Madrid thrashed Liverpool a few days back, started criticizing the team’s lack of intent in La Liga matches. Here are a few reactions-

If Barcelona wins their next La Liga clash against Almeria tomorrow, they will establish a 10-point lead over Real Madrid. Interestingly, the two teams are also scheduled to face each other next in the Copa del Rey semi-finals, the first leg of which will take place in the first week of March.
