When Erling Haaland woke up on the morning of 4th December, he must’ve woken up unhappy and filled with rage. The night before he had provided his teammate, Jack Grealish, a perfect chance to score just moments after he was fouled for a potential winner against Spurs in the 93rd minute. Referee Simon Hooper called advantage but as Grealish got a 1v1 opportunity against Guglielmo Vicario, he called the foul and stopped the play.
Manchester City players surrounded him, all shouting at him for stopping play when they could have beaten Tottenham Hotspur. The game finished 3-3, with both sides gaining only a point.

Just moments after the final whistle blew, the 23-year-old hopped on Twitter and had only one thing to say about Hooper’s refereeing.
The tweet garnered over 54 million views and 504 Thousand likes. If what his next tweet said is true, then the Norwegian must’ve sat all day with a frown, still furious about Simon Hooper’s humongous blunder. But then, a meme based on his reaction in the game finally made him smile.
Popular X social media account, ‘Out of Context Football’, posted a photo of an iconic painting called ‘The Scream’ painted by Norwegian artist Edward Munch. The catch? Instead of the figure screaming in fear, it is Erling Haaland screaming. Haaland saw the meme and let everyone know that it was the first time he smiled all day. He retweeted the post with the caption reading:
Wtf that made me smile for the first time today

Now, Haaland and Manchester City await the FA’s call. He and his manager, Pep Guardiola could be recipients of a possible ban by the FA as they criticized Simon Hooper, with Haaland even shouting obscenities at the referee. If not a ban, they could be penalized with a fine. The draw affects the Premier League table, which means City drop down a spot to third, with them being 1 point behind Liverpool and 3 points behind table toppers, Arsenal.
