“She’s back”- Fans react as Jenni Hermoso returns to the Spain Women’s National Team with a late goal against Italy

Jenni Hermoso made headlines by missing a critical penalty in the World Cup final but ended up winning the tournament with a goal from Olga Carmona. Later, she was involved in a ‘kissgate’ scandal with ex-Spanish FA President Luis Rubiales.
While all the controversies surrounding it a clip emerged of Hermoso laughing about it. Many fans said that she is portraying herself as a victim in front of the media. However, she got much support from the players as well as fans. This also led to Rubiales’ resignation and an apology. Recently, she backed all of it with a strong performance, scoring a late 89th-minute goal.
It came for the Spanish National Women’s team against Italy in the Nations League match. The goal was a result of her awareness to convert a rebound shot from Alexia Putellas which was saved first time by Italian goalkeeper Laura Giuliani. Hermoso came on in the 68th minute but was invisible up until her goal.
Post-game, Hermoso highlighted her ecstasy of being able to play and help her national side following what all happened. She said:
I am happy because thanks to them today I enjoyed football once again.
The scandal resulted in various players protesting and speaking up, the manager’s suspension, and the President’s resignation. Many fans online said that it eventually became ‘the highlight’ of the 2023 Women’s World Cup than the actual games.
