Cristiano Ronaldo‘s two goals against Slovakia secured Portugal’s spot in Euro 2024. This remarkable achievement makes him the first player ever to qualify for six UEFA European Championships.
Ronaldo’s Euro journey began in 2004 when he was just 19, playing in his home country. His debut ended in tears as Portugal lost in the finals. He had to wait 12 years to experience victory, lifting the Euros trophy in 2016. Now, with his sixth qualification, he surpasses his former Real Madrid teammate, Iker Casillas, who participated in Spain’s Euro teams five times from 2000 to 2016.
Portugal breezed through the qualifiers, winning all seven matches and netting 27 times while letting in just two goals. Roberto Martinez, the new manager following Fernando Santos’ dismissal after a disappointing World Cup, has begun his tenure on a strong note. Some had doubts about Cristiano Ronaldo’s future after the World Cup, but he’s proven he’s still going strong, ranking as the second top scorer in the Euro Qualifiers with seven goals.
UEFA Euros 2026, marks the 8th consecutive appearance for Portugal in the competition after missing out on the tournament back in 1988.
Twitter Reacts to Cristiano Ronaldo qualifying for his sixth Euro
With another Euro solidified for Cristiano Ronaldo, the player has the opportunity to not only break records but also further the records he currently holds. Cristiano is currently the highest-scoring player of all time in the Euro with 14 goals in five different editions of the tournament. The only current player who could break his record is France’s Antoine Griezmann who is currently at 7. However, at the age of 32, it seems unlikely to happen.
Here are some of the reactions:
As Cristiano Ronaldo makes his way to the Euro in Germany, many of the Portuguese public have wished for players to not start games as their main forward. Cristiano will be 39 by the time the Euro begins. His old age has made many question whether or not the player should be in the Starting XI for the National Team.
Furthermore, picking Ronaldo would also mean that players in their prime or upcoming players’ integration into the National squad could be hindered. With Ronaldo’s intention to play in the 2026 World Cup in the USA, by that time reaching the age of 41, the public is unsure about the player’s involvement.
