However, the penalty, which Barcelona scored in the 18th minute, was questioned by many United fans and supporters. Bruno Fernandes tugged Barcelona defender Alejandro Balde’s arm, which sent him spiraling into the ground, in Manchester United’s box, which was not overturned by VAR.
Lewandowski converted the penalty, however, Barcelona received mockery from the fans after the controversial goal. Barcelona and United’s first-leg clash on February 16 ended in a thrilling 2-2 draw. Xavi’s side took the lead after the goal from Lewandowski. Bruno Fernandes also missed a crucial one on one chance against David De Gea in the first half, as his shot was saved by the Manchester United Goalkeeper.
Manchester United had a good start to the game. However, after falling behind in the score line, there seemed to be a lack of confidence. Barca continued to press United, as the Catalans almost scored a second goal after De Gea made a huge error which led to a close-range effort from Marcos Alonso. Manchester United’s midfielder Casemiro made a crucial block, stopping Alonso’s efforts, and saving United from conceding another goal.
