Real Madrid in action against Barcelona

Barcelona continued from where they left at the 2023 Supercopa final and once again defeated Champions League defending champions and arch-rivals, Real Madrid, 1-0 in the first leg of the 2022-23 Copa del Rey semifinal on Thursday. The Catalans looked quite solid in their defense and after striking early, didn’t give the Los Blancos any serious chances to score.

Coming to the match, an error from Real Madrid’s Camavinga led to Barcelona’s first goal. The ball, after the young Frenchman lost possession, got deflected from Eder Militao’s foot during Barcelona’s attack and later went inside the net, making it an own goal. In the second half, Real Madrid tried hard and kept possession but failed to breach the wall of the Catalans’ great defense. As a result, at the time of the final whistle, all fans could see were the disappointing faces of Karim Benzema, Vinicius Jr., and others.

The win is special for Barcelona manager Xavi Hernandez, who was playing his first match at the Santiago Bernabeu, Real Madrid’s home stadium. Interestingly, what’s even more charismatic is the fact that the Catalans were able to get past the Madridistas even without the likes of Robert Lewandowski, Pedri, and Ousmane Dembele.

Real Madrid has already lost the 2023 Supercopa title to Barcelona earlier this year in Saudi Arabia. Moreover, they are currently seven points behind them in the 2022-23 La Liga table. Under such a situation, Los Blancos’ fans were not just disappointed but angry at their players and even at their manager, Carlo Ancelotti.

While some of them on Twitter trolled Camavinga for his poor ball control, others slammed the team’s attack, especially in the first half of the match. Here are a few reactions-

Real Madrid and Barcelona will next meet on March 19 for the second leg of the Copa del Rey at Camp Nou. The Catalans have a superb record at home this season and thus, it’ll be really difficult for the ‘King of Comebacks’ to break that record and advance to the Copa del Rey final, a tournament they are yet to win since 2014.
