Pep Guardiola‘s Manchester City had a thrilling night at the Red Bull Arena as they drew 1-1 against RasenBallsport Leipzig. The Premier League champions came to Germany as the favorites to win this tie. What was looking like a one-sided draw at the beginning, turned out to be a heavy-metal football competition between the two clubs.

Manchester City dominated the first half of the Champions League knockout game. Leipzig manager Marco Rose must have given the Bundesliga side a harsh half-time talk after a lazy 45 minutes against one of the biggest teams in Europe. RB Leipzig changed their attitude in the second half, posing more threat to City while constantly increasing their pressing intensity.

Riyad Mahrez opened the scoring with a sublime finish around the 27th minute of the game. RB Leipzig took some time before finally finding the attacking rhythm. Croatian defender Josko Gvardiol nullified things in front of the home fans after a towering header from a corner. Though the Premier League side dominated the overall stats, they couldn’t manage to grasp an away advantage in Germany.

As expected, the Blues kept the majority share of possession (62%). They failed to include their star striker Erling Haaland in the build-up plays which cost them a draw. Manchester City attempted 12 shots, out of which just three were on target. On the other hand, RB Leipzig had seven attempts on goal, managing four shots on target. The Bundesliga club even had more big chances (3) than City (1).
