India won 2-0 against Nepal in the SAFF Championship match on Saturday, June 24, 2023. This victory guaranteed their place in the semifinals of the tournament.
Both the teams started in an attacking fashion with quite a few attempts but none proved productive as they couldn’t find the back of the net. The first half ended goalless. Although India had a hefty 65% possession in the game. But they managed to have only three shots in goal but none were on target. On the other hand, Nepal had their best chance on goal from the winger Anjan Bista‘s attempt from the top of the box but Indian goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu made a heroic save in the 17th minute.
The second half started in a similar fashion. Indian skipper Sunil Chhetri scored at the 61 minutes mark to put India in the lead. This marked his 91st goal for his country. But right after the goal, in the 64th minute, a brawl between both teams emerged and the match was thus halted. In the 70th minute after the match restarted, India doubled their lead as Mahesh Singh Naorem scored a header to put India 2-0 up.
Although there were a few attempts later, the score line stayed in India’s favor as they marched forward in the later stages of the tournament. Even though he couldn’t be on the sideline to support his team but coach Igor Stimac must be happy to see his team’s performance today.

This victory assured the Blue Tigers to move forward at the next stages of the competition as they are now in the semifinals. Skipper Sunil Chhetri and Mahesh Singh Naorem helped the team with two crucial goals in just 9 minutes.
Fans were really happy with the performance of the team. Many even took to social media to congrats captain Chhetri and Co. for their heroics. One fan wrote, “Heartiest Congratulations to Sunil and the entire Team India under Igor Stimac…..!!” Another fan wrote, “Just watched my first football match, India vs Nepal #SAFFChampionship2023 it was so amazing I enjoyed every bit of it and always India for the win.” And a third fan wrote, “2 goals since I turned into India vs Nepal Match.
