AFC Wrexham defeated Manchester United 3-1 in a pre-season friendly match on Tuesday. United has a team filled with young players as they have another friendly match within 24 hours against Real Madrid. Wrexham lost their striker Paul Mullin within the first 13 minutes after Manchester United’s goalkeeper Nathan Bishop hit him in the ribs. He somehow avoided being sent off, while Mullin went straight to the hospital after possibly puncturing his lung.
Elliot Lee and Aaron Hayden scored for the Ryan Reynolds-owned side to give them a 2-0 lead. Marc Jurado scored a goal for United to reduce the deficit. At the start of the second half, Daniel Gore, the young midfielder who impressed throughout the pre-season, got sent off. Thus, Manchester United were reduced to 10 men.
Wrexham took advantage of that, as they again doubled their lead after a goal from Sam Dalby. The match ended in a historic 3-1 win for the League Two side. However, Manchester United’s manager Erik Ten Hag won’t be too disappointed, as none of the senior players took part in the game.
The younger players struggled with the physicality of the League 2 side, which resulted in some rash decisions. This eventually led to their defeat in the match. It could result in a learning experience for them. Conversely, Wrexham will relish this victory over the 20-time champions.
