“First choice to replace David Moyes; Will do a better job”- Fans want Ted Lasso’s Nathan Shelley as new West Ham manager
Season 3 of the show premiered on March 15, 2023.
Fans jokingly want Nathan Shelley of Ted Lasso to replace David Moyes as West Ham United‘s new manager. Nathan “Nate” Shelley is a regular character in Ted Lasso, an Apple TV+ show. He worked briefly as a kit man and assistant coach for AFC Richmond and now coaches West Ham United FC.
In the series, he was friends with Ted Lasso before becoming his enemy and eventually aligning himself with West Ham United owner Rupert Mannion. Nate is viewed negatively in the series after splitting with Ted and siding with the antagonistic Rupert, his Hammers colleague.
In an interview, Nick Mohammed, who plays Nate Shelley, talked about the characters redemption arc. “I genuinely don’t know. I know bits but not the details. We’ll see if Nate manages to find his way back to Richmond. But the thing with Ted Lasso is the audience are possibly expecting a redemption arc for Nate, and I’d like to see one I think because that would be nice. But equally, I could well imagine the writers thinking: ’no, we’re going to turn it on its head’, because that’s what they did in season two, playing against everyone’s expectations, so he might be the one character they don’t redeem.”
He also discussed his “life-changing” experience playing Nate and his initial reaction to the character’s villainous turn. When Ted Lasso’s season 2 finale premiered in October, it featured a number of unexpected twists.

Nick Mohammed said he needed to find “a real truth” to play Nathan “Nate” Shelley on the show. Shelley began as an underdog character in Season 1 before taking a “slightly different turn” in Season 2, when Mohammed said he transformed his character. He is now widely regarded as a villain.
“In order to sort of play it realistically I had to sort of find a real truth to why he was behaving that way,” Mohammed said of his character. “A lot of it does stem from this toxic relationship he has with his dad,” Mohammed said. “And you know, he was clearly bullied when he first started out as a kit man, by some of the players at the club, in AFC Richmond.”
Every villain has a backstory, he says, and Shelley is no exception — though he does not approve of his character’s recent behaviour.“I don’t condone it, but … he is quite fun to play,” he added.
