FC Barcelona find themselves in a tricky position. Even though the Blaugrana topped their Champions League group, inconsistent performances and poor displays against ‘weaker’ opponents have forced head coach Xavi to face certain ‘harsh’ consequences. The World Cup winner said that he may have to leave given the club failed to secure silverware at the end of the season.

FC Barcelona most recently disappointed fans when they were dealt a 3-2 loss against Royal Antwerp. Ahead of the clash against Valencia in La Liga, Xavi tried to breathe confidence into his side. However, he urged the team to have “stability” and that they are the defending La Liga and Super Cup champions.

The fans are a perfect ten. We will give everything.

However, he revealed that a departure from FC Barcelona may be on the table given certain circumstances. However, he left room for hope. “It’s only December“. Subsequently, Xavi also criticized the media for switching up on their opinion.

If at the end of the season, Barcà haven't won anything, maybe I'll leave.

Xavi and co. are currently 4th in La Liga and seven points behind table toppers Girona.

Earlier you called me the Sir Alex Ferguson of Barcà, now you're kicking me out.

Barcelona Sporting Director Deco clashes with Frenkie de Jong

Barcelona were beaten 3-2 against Royal Antwerp in Group H’s final game. The defending La Liga champions qualified as group toppers, but managed to do so narrowly, as Porto finished 2nd due to an inferior goal difference. Barcelona #21 and midfield maestro Frenkie de Jong missed the trip to Antwerp as Xavi altered his squad before the game. Even though it was reported that De Jong missed the game due to feverish conditions, rumors suggest otherwise.

As reported by a RAC1 journalist, club Sporting Director Deco questioned the Dutchman’s ‘illness’. Deco ‘scolded’ De Jong, as per reports. While De Jong explained that he was sick, Deco replied “What do you mean you’re sick? Has the doctor already certified that you’re sick?“. De Jong, Ikay Gundogan and Ronald Araujo were all omitted from the squad list ahead of the Antwerp clash. However, a revised squad list featured both Gundogan and Araujo, which adds to the controversy.

FC Barcelona face Valencia on matchday 17 of 38. As the season is almost half underway, Xavi and co. will have to step things up if they are to defend the title. Girona is 7 points ahead in first place while rivals Real Madrid are close behind in 2nd position. Atletico Madrid sits third and the defending champions are fourth. Xavi recently said that he feels a desire to do more with and achieve more with the club.
