One of the most beautiful things a domestic Cup can offer is the fact that any team can draw to face another. FC Barcelona qualified for the Copa del Rey Round of 16 after a tough battle against Barbastro on Monday. The Segunda Federacion team put up a strong fight as Barcelona managed to win the game 3-2. The footballing community is set to witness another potential underdog story as third-division side Unionistas de Salamanca were drawn to face FC Barcelona.

As the Copa del Rey Round of 16 draw unfolded, Unionistas were drawn to face the defending La Liga champions. Live footage from the Unionistas camp showed the players and management in celebration, hugging each other and shouting cheers of joy. The clips have gone viral on social media with fans expecting a beautiful showdown on 17th January.

Unionistas player Alfred Planas however, remains confident that the third-division side can force an upset in the competition. The club defeated La Liga club Villareal CF in the Round of 32 on penalty shootout.

Barcelona are not at their best at the moment. We know that anything can happen in a single match and playing in our stadium.

Xavi and Co. narrowly scrape past Barbastro

Barcelona were up against fourth-tier side Barbastro in the Copa del Rey Round of 32 on Monday. The game, which was hosted at the Estadio Municipal was dubbed as an ‘easy’ win for Xavi‘s men. However, the trip to Barbastro proved to be more than challenging as Barcelona had to see the game off, all the way to minute 90+3’.

The game kicked off with Barcelona comfortably in control, as Fermin Lopez gave the visitors the early lead. Barcà doubled their advantage through Raphinha in the early minutes of the second half. This proved to be the wake-up call for the home side, who struck back within nine minutes. Adria de Mesa tumbled the ball in from a calamitous corner kick to make it 2-1.

The game was in the balance till late in the 88th minute, when Barcelona were awarded a penalty for a handball on Robert Lewandowski‘s header. The Polish striker made no mistake as he rolled his spot kick into the bottom right corner, sending the keeper the wrong way. However, Barbastro were not done yet as they too, were awarded a spot kick, which was converted. However, it proved to be too little, too late as Barcelona ran away with the tie.
