FC Barcelona and Xavi find themselves on the wrong end of things yet again as the Blaugrana suffered a humiliating 2-4 defeat at the hands of Girona. The visitors enjoyed their ‘first-ever’ win against Barcelona and it remains safe to say that it was a ‘big’ one indeed. Girona thoroughly outplayed the home side as two late goals finished off a Barcelona side who were struggling to stay in the match.

Xavi and co. were comfortably ‘second best’ on a night where Girona led in terms of nothing but ‘goals’. Surprisingly, the stats reveal that the Catalans were wasteful in attack, squandering several chances throughout the game. Goals from Robert Lewandowski and Ilkay Gundogan proved to be too little too late as Eric Garcia got the better of his former side.

Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo expressed his disappointment with the team after the game. “We are not very happy” said the Uruguayan, calling Girona a “great club”. The defending champions are now 7 points off the top spot and are fourth in La Liga. Girona comfortably reclaimed the top spot with 41 points in 16 games.

Fans react to FC Barcelona’s misery at the hands of their Catalan rivals

FC Barcelona has failed ‘miserably’ yet again and the internet has had its say. Fans worldwide have taken to social media and the verdict is out – Xavi and Barcelona are the ‘laughing stock’ of Europe. Last year’s La Liga champions have struggled in recent games to hold possession and create chances. This forced a fan to comment that the club needs a better coach and that Xavi needs to be sacked.

Another fan laughed at the monumental fall from glory that Barcelona suffered. Rivals fans laughed at the result, saying that results like these are what they want to see. Others dragged Barcà’s name ‘through the mud’, and called them second best in Catalonia. Some shared hilarious pictures of Xavi and made fun of the term ‘Xavi ball’.

Others saw it as an immediate opportunity to spam pictures of how Real Madrid beat Girona 3-0 earlier this season. Match MVP Miguel Gutierrez being a Real Madrid academy product was also highlighted by fans. A fan said that a La Fabrica product ‘owned’ Barcelona yesterday. Xavi and co. now face their next challenge in La Liga against Valencia on the road.
