Real Madrid‘s Federico Valverde punched Villarreal’s Alex Baena after Madrid’s 3-2 La Liga defeat to Villarreal at the Santiago Bernabeu on Saturday. The Uruguayan midfielder reacted angrily to alleged derogatory remarks that Baena had made about his unborn child. Valverde’s partner Mina Bonino revealed on social media in February that the couple had believed they had lost their child.
The Uruguayan player was waiting for him in the area where the visiting team buses are parked. The history behind the conflict goes back to January when the 21-year-old reportedly said to Valverde, “Cry because your child won’t be born” during a Copa del Rey game between the two teams. He repeated the feat again after the Yellow Submarines bagged the three points.
Valverde was reportedly angry about the comments and confronted Baena to ask him to repeat what was allegedly said on the field, which ultimately resulted in the punch. Villarreal believes his actions to be unacceptable. The club has reportedly spoken to Spanish police about possible courses of action, while Baena will decide if he wants to press charges.
All that swept aside, Real Madrid will face Chelsea in the Champions League quarterfinals on Thursday. The Uruguayan has been a key player for Real Madrid and will hope to put up his performances to the fight with La Liga out of reach. Villarreal on the other hand faces Valladolid on Saturday pushing ever so slightly for a top-four spot.

Valverde may just be the most complete midfielder in the world. He is referred to as a “three-lunged” midfielder, it’s because of how superior his stamina level is compared to that of his opponents and compatriots. Even though he’s initially assigned to assist Vinicius and Benzema on the flanks, he drops back into midfield and helps in defence, and still races back in time to get teams on the counter. Valverde’s passing is quick and accurate as well, giving opponents less time to react. And, he does all of this barely dropping a sweat. Time upon time, he continues to show Madridistas that he gives his all for the white shirt.
Valverde has drastically improved in the attacking aspect during this season. His shooting prowess is excellent, and he has the ability to shoot long rangers with power and precision. He is the driver of attacks from midfield, creating free space and outrunning opponents with his speed. Apart from his passing and attacking, the player always tracks back to defend and is constantly pressurizing his opponent’s markers.
Valverde can play as a winger and practically anywhere in midfield and still, leave an everlasting impact. He likes to dictate play, win the ball back, and quickly race down the flanks for a counter. He usually closes down his opponent’s markers instantly and has the unique ability to sense dangerous attacks beforehand. Valverde keeps switching between midfield and the flank, but he usually starts as a winger. Due to his stamina and fitness, he’s able to rotate between both in games, giving extra support to the midfield and defence.
