FIFA appoints three female referees to officiate during the World Cup 2022 in Qatar

According to reports, FIFA has ensured that there will be female referees controlling the match proceedings during the World Cup 2022 in Qatar which will start in November 2022.

Stephanie Frappart of France, Salima Mukansanga of Rwanda, and Yoshimi Yamashita of Japan have been named to the list of 36 referees who will take the field in Qatar in November and December, marking a significant step towards gender equality in football. The trio will be joined by Neuza Back of Brazil, Karen Daz Medina of Mexico, and Kathryn Nesbitt of the United States, who are among the 69 assistant referees.

FIFA Head of Referees, Pierluigi Collina, took the step of bringing female referees to take charge of the matches played in the World Cup in Qatar as no gender discrimination was entertained during the selections of the match officials.

This concludes a long process that began several years ago with the deployment of female referees at Fifa men’s junior and senior tournaments,” Collina said on female referees.

“In this way, we clearly emphasize that it is quality that counts for us and not genders. I would hope that in the future, the selection of elite women’s match officials for important men’s competitions will be perceived as something normal and no longer as sensational. They deserve to be at the Fifa World Cup because they constantly perform at a really high level, and that’s the important factor for us,” added Collina.
