“Mental finish”- Football fans lose their minds over Australia’s ‘nail-biting’ victory over France on home soil as they sail into the world cup semifinals

Australia handed France a heartbreak defeat in the FIFA Women’s World Cup in a 7-6 penalty shootout. The game proved historic for several reasons, as it provided everyone with the longest-ever penalty shootout in men’s or women’s format. Fans were in ecstasy as the stadium roared at Australia’s victory. The historic moment was witnessed in Brisbane’s Suncorp Stadium as the hosts progressed to the world cup semis.
Unfortunately for the French Team, they had a goal disallowed in extra time as neither could break the deadlock throughout 120 minutes. With over 50000 fans in the stadium, the team did a lap around them as they clinched the historic win. Cortnee Vine, the twentieth penalty taker for the Matildas, scored the winning penalty. The substitute winger has had a shining moment as the pressure of re-taking the penalty, which she converted brilliantly.
The Australian fans have had significant exposure to the World Cup as their hopes are higher than ever, having lost three quarter-finals earlier. The Les Bleues had plenty of chances during the match, which they sadly couldn’t convert during the game. France’s manager Herve Renard himself has had a great year with his achievements in both the World Cups. He said his team played ‘exceptionally well,’ but fate chose the winner.
The tournament is set for another thriller as the Matildas look forward to playing England. As the Lionesses beat the Colombians with a 2-1 victory in regular time. Both the managers appreciated Australia’s grit to win the game, as France missed four penalties. However, it will be interesting to see if Australia’s penalty skills can help them further in the tournament.
