“From frypan to fire”- Football world reacts to Chelsea announcing Mauricio Pochettino as new manager

Mauricio Pochettino to make a Premier League return after Tottenham to London rivals Chelsea.

Chelsea have agreed terms with Mauricio Pochettino to become their new head coach. Details of the deal are expected to be finalized in the coming days. Pochettino will start his new role in the summer. He will collaborate with Chelsea’s sporting directors and Frank Lampard, who is the interim head coach, before the end of the season.

The Argentine has been out of football since departing his role with Paris Saint-Germain in July of last year. Chelsea has been looking for a new permanent head coach since sacking Graham Potter last month, with former boss Lampard placed in temporary charge for the remainder of the season.

Pochettino rose to prominence at Espanyol and Southampton before a hugely successful spell with Chelsea’s London rivals Tottenham. He helped Spurs qualify for the top four in four-straight seasons as well as leading them to a first Champions League final in 2019. The 51-year-old was sacked the following season before taking up the role of head coach with PSG in January 2021.

He won the Coupe de France in May 2021 before claiming the Ligue 1 title the following season. Chelsea has endured a hugely difficult season with both Potter and Thomas Tuchel paying the price with their jobs. Lampard was placed in caretaker charge in April and, after a run of six straight defeats, secured his first victory with a 3-1 win over Bournemouth in May.

Although Pochettino will not formally begin work for several weeks, he is expected to discuss summer transfer targets with co-controlling owners Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali ahead of what is likely to be a busy window at Stamford Bridge. The club needs to offload multiple players given there are many members of the first-team squad excluding those set to return to London from loan spells.
