England manager Gareth Southgate has left the game against Ukraine wanting more from his attackers. He described the team as “wasn’t at the level” comparing them to their previous performances. England were held to a 1-1 draw against Ukraine after Kyle Walker‘s goal saved a point for the men in white. Following a lackluster performance, Gareth Southgate shared his disappointment at the team’s performance.

“We turned over [lost] too many balls that we wouldn’t normally. I wouldn’t expect that to happen again,” he explained. England displayed individual brilliance. A beautiful assist by Harry Kane allowed Kyle Walker to control and finish, equalizing the score. Apart from the goal, Bukayo Saka came close to scoring but hit the bar. Apart from that, fans believe that the team played below par.

However, Gareth Southgate gave the team credit for controlling the game against an intense atmosphere. “I thought we played with real composure up until the final third.”It’s a very important point for us and we’ve now played the two best-ranked teams away from home and we’ve got four points from those two games,” Gareth said.

He pointed out certain individuals as well. Players like Marc Guehi and James Maddison did well in a game of this veracity. He also complimented the more experienced players, stating their importance for the team. England are currently on their way to the Euros as they lead their group with 13 points in 5 games.

Following England’s shocking departure in the Euros against Iceland, Gareth Southgate has made England a formidable team. Fans noticed a level of harmony in the national team that was absent for long periods of time. England was winning games they should be winning and was competing against the best as they should be with the amount of talent they have.

A run to the World Cup semi-finals in 2018 had fans excited for England’s future. A lot of young talents were emerging, and the future looked bright for the squad. The Euros 2021 were the closest the team ever came to an international trophy. The finals were held at Wembley Stadium. The fans would have lost their minds if they had lifted a trophy in front of a home crowd.

However, Italy spoiled the party as they emerged victors. An admirable loss to France in the 2022 World Cup had fans believing that they should have won the game as they played better on the night.

Gareth Southgate has been under scrutiny as of late. With his in-game tactics being criticized and his team selection being questioned, fans have been calling for his ‘sack’. What the fans cannot deny, however, is the belief that the manager brought back.
