England national team manager, Gareth Southgate, in a recent interview with Sky Sports’ Rob Dorsett, mentioned his readiness to manage any other team or major club after his tenure with England concludes. He discussed England’s Euro 2024 prospects and referenced a conversation he had with Jose Mourinho.
Former Aston Villa defender, Gareth Southgate has been at the helm of managing the England national side since 2016, after a successful stint with the England U-21 team. His time leading the Three Lions has seen a mix of achievements: reaching the finals of the 2021 UEFA Euros, the semi-finals of the 2018 FIFA World Cup, and the quarter-finals of the 2022 World Cup. However, speculation suggests that his managerial role might conclude following England’s involvement in the Euros 2024, despite these accomplishments.
Southgate wants to move to club football. He agrees with ex-United manager Jose Mourinho that leading England prepares him for any job. He believes no football role is as challenging as his current one. Southgate praises England’s unbeaten year and stresses the need for top form from key players like Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane for success in the 2024 Euros.
I remember talking to Jose (Mourinho) when he was at Man United and he said: 'You know, when you've done the role you're in now, you'll be able to do anything. There isn't a job in world football that would intimidate or daunt you, having lived this one (England), frankly. You're not going to have any higher profile, you're not going to have any greater pressure, you're not going to have any more complex issues.Soutgate said in an interview with Sky Sports
Gareth Southgate, despite a less successful period at Middlesbrough following their relegation in 2009, has a strong ambition to lead a Premier League team. He remains confident that his time with England has equipped him to eventually take charge of a top-tier club.
Gareth Southgate discusses the possibility of wildcard selections for the 2024 Euro squad
In a Sky Sports interview, Gareth Southgate discussed potential wildcard additions to the England national team for the 2024 UEFA European Championship in Germany. He suggested the possibility that one or two players might make a late bid to join the squad for the upcoming tournament.
Acknowledging the challenge for new or uncapped players to break into the squad, he emphasized the significance of the current squad’s maturity, solidifying its position as a dominant force in European football.
Ahead of the 2024 competition, Southgate carefully balanced expectations, acknowledging England’s strong chance while avoiding the pressure of being labeled favorites. He considered instilling pride in both players and fans his most significant accomplishment during his tenure.
