Speculations surround England National team Head Coach Gareth Southgate. Many reports suggest that the manager will step down after Euros in 2024. Meanwhile, many expected Southgate to leave after the Lions lost to France in the quarterfinal of the FIFA World Cup in Qatar. But, it clearly has not been the case.

Prior to the World Cup in Qatar, the English FA listed a number of potential heirs for the Englishman. Including Mauricio Pochettino, Brendan Rodgers, Eddie Howe, and Graham Potter. Contractual obligations and requirements with PSG and Newcastle United meant that recruiting Poch or Howe was difficult at the time. However, this intent showed England’s openness to even recruit a non-English coach as charge, since Fabio Capello back in the year 2008.

Even Machester City manager Pep Guardiola has been said to be the number 1 choice for the FA. But, they are wary of the fact that the Spaniard is under contract with the Cityzens until 2025. Further, Eddie Howe is at the heart of a Newcastle rebuild while Brendan Rodgers is at Celtic. This only leaves Graham Potter up for grabs for now.

The FA is prepared for the departure of Gareth Southgate post Euros 2024. On the flip side, however, lining up a new coach that fits the English game plan and team dynamic remains a task that they do not seem confident of achieving successfully.

Along with Southgate, veterans Harry Maguire and Jordan Henderson are also expected to bid adieu due to their age. Captain and the talismanic striker Harry Kane will be 31 after the Euros. So, finding a worthy replacement is also something that the FA will have to tackle.

England are set to face Ukraine and Scotland as part of the Euro 2024 Qualifiers. Ahead of the International break, Jack Grealish and Trent Alexander-Arnold are set to miss selection following recent injuries. However, in spite of Grealish’s late pull-out from the squad, Raheem Sterling will not be called upon, even though Southgate earlier said that the player was ‘not happy’ following his exclusion from the squad.

Furthermore, Arsenal striker Eddie Nketiah and Chelsea defender Levi Colwill received their first English call-ups. They are part of the 26-man squad announced by Southgate. Fikayo Tomori is also back in the squad after a brief exclusion from international duty.
