Barcelona starlet and Spanish midfielder Gavi recently suffered an ACL injury against Georgia during a UEFA Euro Qualifier on Sunday. FIFA has added ‘insult to injury’ as fans troll the club for their compensation of €20,548 for each day the player misses out due to injury. The youngster is set to miss at least 6 months on the sidelines and his recovery will determine his return.
Gavi picked up an unfortunate injury against Georgia in the 26th minute of the game. The player was seen clutching his knee and crying out in pain. He was immediately substituted and tests have determined that the player has a ‘complete tear of the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee’. An ACL injury will keep players sidelined for at least 6 months, meaning that the player’s 2023/24 season is over while also putting his Euro 2024 in jeopardy.
FIFA is obliged to pay a club compensation if a player misses more than 28 days due to an injury picked up international duty. FIFA can pay a maximum of €7.5 million for a single player.
Since Gavi is likely to miss at least six months, the club will earn a minimum of €3 million. FC Barcelona will start to receive money from FIFA, starting December 16, and will continue to receive €20,548 till he returns to action.
Fans react to Barcelona ‘getting’ money from FIFA – calls them ‘broke’
The Internet has reacted to FIFA’s compensation for Gavi’s injury, and it is safe to say that they are ‘not’ impressed. Many refuse to acknowledge the need for an International break, while others have made fun of the ‘meager’ sum the club is set to receive in compensation. €20,548 is ‘nothing’ compared to Gavi’s net worth or career, valued at €90 million.
A fan commented, “Brokelona would be on cloud 9 after hearing this news.” Another labeled this an ‘inside job to balance the books’ pointing to Barcà’s poor financial situation in recent years. However, many feel that the amount is nowhere near the value of the player. A fan said ‘nowhere near his value when he plays for us’, while another said ‘not worth him not playing for us’. Here are some of the fans’ reactions:
Many also blamed the International breaks and the decision to play Gavi, even though Spain had already qualified before the game. The player will undergo surgery in the coming days and will be sidelined for at least six months. The maximum FIFA can pay compensation is for 365 days. Gavi played 24 games this season already, for both Spain and Barcelona in all competitions.
