Andre Onana and Harry Maguire have been the most criticised players at Machester United. The £47 million goalkeeper and £80 million defender have been largely underwhelming for the greater part of this season. While Onana has been struggling to keep clean sheets, Maguire has not had enough playing time.
However, neither player had a touch of good fortune as they were involved in a narrow 1-0 win against Copenhagen. Maguire was responsible for the goal while Onana made sure that the home side walked away with all 3 points. However, it was in the 6th minute of injury time that Onana rose to the position of a hero. His penalty save kept the score 1-0, assuring that United went home with all 3 points.
Scott McTominay gave away a penalty in the drying moments of the game. His attempted clearance caught Elyounoussi in the stomach. However, in a spectacular turn of events, Andre Onana kept out the penalty. He denied Jordan Larsson from the spot as he dispatched a thunderous strike from 12 yards.
However, Onana dove to his left, and guessed right. A strong right arm kept the score 1-0 before he was drowned in the embrace of his teammates.
Manchester United secure first win in Champions League
The Red Devils secured their first three points in the Champions League on Tuesday. The side led by Erik ten Hag struggled to take the lead, but a goal from Harry Maguire and a last-minute save from Andre Onana assured the three points. Manchester United were on the front foot early on. The home side dominated possession and chances created. However, they lacked finishing. Moreover, the Copenhagen keeper was having a night to remember.
United were denied multiple times in the evening thanks to Kamil Grabara. However, Andre Onana also came up with important saves throughout the game. His diving saves to keep out Copenhagen in the second half also turned heads. His “season defending” save sent the fans into mayhem. Moreover, Harry Maguire‘s headed goal also causes reason for celebration.
Camera’s showed an elated Peter Schmeichel following the penalty save. His save meant that United secured their first win of the season and rose from the bottom of their group. With the group stage halfway done, United are third, with 3 points in 3 games. Onana said after the game that “I’m just doing my job” and that they have to “keep going” for the rest of the season.
