In the midst of the club’s ongoing contract dispute with Frenkie de Jong, Gerard Pique reportedly offered to play for Barcelona for free before settling for a pay cut.
The Catalan giants were instructed to cut back on their spending after La Liga refused to register their five new recruits and two contract extensions this summer. Pique and Sergio Busquets were met with last week in an effort to persuade them to lower their payments.
Busquets and Barca have agreed to a wage deferral arrangement, which implies that while he will take a drop in his immediate compensation, he will eventually be paid back for his outstanding wages over the term of his contract, which may be stretched into next summer.

Gerard Pique offers to play for free for Barcelona:

The club and Busquets’ agent, Josep Maria Orobitg, have reached an agreement in principle to lower the midfielder’s immediate compensation, but the team will then owe the Spanish player back payments to make up for their previously agreed-upon contract.
Pique’s circumstance is unique; the seasoned center back has consented to a pay cut with the team. He really volunteered to play for free, according to a source in Diario AS, but Barca rejected the idea. However, it heightens interest in De Jong’s potential future.
The highest-paid player at Barcelona, a Dutch international, is also due an extra €17 million in outstanding payments. The player’s representatives, Hasan Centikaya and Ali Dursun, met with Barca executives on Wednesday of last week and are advising the Dutch playmaker to fight for the money he is entitled to.
Along with Marc-Andre Ter Stegen, Gerard Pique, and Clement Lenglet, De Jong signed new contracts in October 2020. All four players received approval from the club’s former board of directors weeks before they all announced their resignations. According to reports, Barcelona is considering suing De Jong over his contract.
